IS THIS TRUE? ARE POSTERS SIGNING UP ON SI USING DIFFERENT ALIAS'S?

They do it all the time. IP addresses aren't logged during signup. They're logged when posts are written.

When someone points out to me a possible case of one person using multiple aliases, IP addresses pretty reliably confirm it if it's happening. If it happens, all involved accounts are terminated with an admin note so I can later show why the accounts were terminated.

12. PERSONS WHO WISH TO PUBLISH INFORMATION ON YAHOO AND SILICON INVESTOR MESSAGE BOARDS MAY DO SO BY USING MORE THAT ONE ALIAS. AS A RESULT, THE TRUE IDENTITY OF THE PERSONS PUBLISHING INFORMATION ON THESE BOARDS IS UNKNOWN TO OTHER READERS."

That's a non-sequitur (sp?)

And actually it's false right at face value. The Terms of Use on Silicon Investor specifically forbid using multiple accounts. So the statement that people "MAY do so by using more than one alias" is false as it applies to SI. They "can". But they "may" not. And if they're caught, they're shown the door.

The reason it's a non-sequitur is that it's not the multi-alias potential that makes people anonymous. It's that people choose to and are encouraged to use an alias.

Edit: Is that a direct cut and paste from a lawsuit? If so, I'm amazed. I was already surprised at the logic flaw (in my experience having a law degree doesn't empower one with better command of logic than any smart person), but I just noticed a pretty obvious typo, too. "THAT" instead of "THAN". Actually, I'm surprised they didn't spell it "THEN".
