Yes, the "no one will be interested in the 64-bit chips until after all the software has shipped" theory always seems to make sense.

That was the logic IBM used when they passed on the 32-bit 80386 saying no one would be interested in a 32-bit chip until after all the OS and apps had been re-written.

Some fools at a company that only made laptop systems were too dumb to get it, and went ahead shipped the Compaq Deskpro 386 against everyone else's good advice - driving IBM out of its dominance of the PC market.
