Steve,

> AMD64 shipping with what since April?

Opteron was launched in April. It supports the AMD64 instruction set. On the launch day, Suse released (not beta) Enterprise Server 8 for the Opteron. They're now up to Service Pack 2. (See: suse.com )

> Last time I looked, Itanium had more 64 bit applications.

Yeah, the Itaniums are really selling like hotcakes.

EDIT: and you might want to check ixse's post from earlier today on the state of those Itanium 64-bit products like SqlServer.

Doug

p.s. The "I'm long, but I'm *really* concerned by X" yahoo-style of posting isn't really needed on SI. As long as you're polite, you can feel free to be public about being short AMD, or an Intellabee, and post all your arguments. No need to pretend here.

steve - as far as I know, there is NO desktop OS support for Itanium, and only a few lonely workstation offerings, on which you can get Linux or 'this product has an extended ship date' Windows XP, which MSFT has not yet released.

So what applications would you be talking about?
