Put, chronic back pain, oxycontin, and a guy who either had/did a) went doctor shopping, b) had doctors give him what ever he wanted, or c)some illicit supplier, and you get Rush, Winona Rider, Courtney Love... blah blah blah. It doesn't make what he did any more right or wrong and he knew damn good and well what he was doing was wrong and illegal, and bad for his health. End of story.

Read Dr. Voodoo's reply. Rush ran through his prescription years ago. Then took it upon himself to get more. He obtained them illegally.

I have taken similar medications after an accident I had. It takes will power to stop taking the meds, but you do it, because you know you'll never be right again until you do, unless you are weak, like Rush.

I don't think he was taking them for pain after the initial prescription ran out. After that he was a recreational user.
