Shahrzad asked for the job. If I recall correctly, she relieved another girl so she could take her place

She definitely did ask for the job. Not sure she needed to take anyone's place, though. The story tells of the king going through wives at a rate of one per night - marrying one, bedding her that night, and having her decapitated the next morning. She could just wait for her turn.

Her father is the "Vizir" - highest official of the king's state and his right hand. He tries to discourage her, saying it is suicide, but she goes ahead, telling him she can do it.

Great story of a woman using her head (rather than her charms) to succeed, even when faced with extreme danger :-)
