Yes, we can admit the possibility of an individual merit and meaning, while respecting that the meaning is subjective and not capable of objective appeal or entitled to political sway over others...

Remember that for centuries (actually for millenia) religion opposed science and reason, and thus held back all the modern pursuits of value and meaning we have finally created in a rational world. Who would return to those "halcyon" days of ignorant squalour, disease, superstition--and misery from the cradle to the grave? Only those divinities who sat above it all, and who controlled the myths and collected the tribute...

The Church did not overcome herself. She was overcome by the persistence of reason and by the courage of great men and women. She blocked the path of human progress with her swords but was knocked from the path of human progress by the repeated charge of science--and by the blood of great people such as Giordano.

If we take away the modern (and endless) religious wars of people wedded to their myths and to their ascendancy, we are left with a world that has some hope for people and for humankind.
