Of course religion has been both cruel and kind. But you have the cart before the horse. Nietzsche was right in his recognition that democracy and humanism represented extrapolations from Christianity, albeit secularized. It was a religion that raised fishermen to Apostles and considered slaves capable of fellowship in the church, and that extolled Christ's mother as the very image of human virtue, and the Queen of Heaven, that led to a high regard for the common man, the eventual abolition of slavery, and the ultimate rise in the status of women.......
