It is the refusal to refusal to follow rational thought to one of its logical extremes.

You can use rational thought or at least something close to it to get to either extreme. But if you think you've found THE answer, that would be illogical. If you want to believe your extreme, that's fine, but it's illogical to assert that you know it to be true. The only thing we can know is that it's an interesting question and we may have a stake in the answer but we don't have enough data to do more than believe whichever we choose to believe for whatever reason we choose to believe it.

Agnosticism is basically throwing up your hands and saying "I give up." It is the refusal to refusal to follow rational thought to one of its logical extremes.

Or it could be the state of someone who is in the process of gathering information and ideas and setting up the logical thoughts that might lead to some end.
