Korean doctors are moving into China

Shin Yeong-su, 38, is a surgeon who works in a hospital in Incheon. In February he obtained a medical license from the Nanchang, China government and now works in a hospital there on weekends. ¡°China¡¯s economic growth will lead to increased medical demand and it will soon give me higher profits,¡± Mr. Shin said.
A plastic surgeon who asked for anonymity also goes to China frequently. His specialty is making East Asians¡¯ eyelids double-edged. He says he will soon close his cosmetic surgery clinic in Seoul and move to China. ¡°The Korean medical industry is suffering from a deepening economic recession now. China has good economic prospects,¡± he said.
The number of domestic doctors who work or plan to work in China is increasing. With the economic recession in the country and last year¡¯s decision by the Chinese government to partly open China¡¯s medical market, doctors here ¡ª mostly plastic surgeons, dermatologists and dentists, who are sensitive to changes in economic conditions ¡ª are choosing to make money in China.
Also, the success of Korean television and movie stars and singers in China has contributed to this trend. The image of Korea that people have in China has generally improved and young Chinese girls are eager to make their faces look like those of Korean stars. They are looking for Korean plastic surgeons as a result. ¡°Cosmetic surgery to make Chinese look like Korean stars is booming,¡± said a plastic surgeon who works in China.
Last Wednesday, 28 Korean doctors took exams to obtain medical licenses to work in Beijing and Shanghai. An Internet site for doctors recently opened to discuss their entry into China; the site now has 700 members. A medical consulting company in Seoul will next week survey some regions of China where Korean doctors can work.
But some raise concerns about the doctors¡¯ advance into China. ¡°If a Korean doctor wants to open his own clinic in China, it would cost $200,000 and many legal problems exist,¡± said a doctor who recently returned to Korea after working in China. He also warned about the difficulty malpractice suits could pose.
