I stated that I would hardly presume to know NY state political issues well enough to be entitled to an informed opinion on them; how could they presume to know CA issues that well? When I look at the paper each morning, it is not full of details about NY. The evening news here carries info about CA, not NY. And this is between states in the same country; the gulf between nations is wider.

I would suggest that those outside California can see the issues better than those inside precisely because they don't see things through the filter of your evening news and morning paper, with the inherent biases and agendas in each. Being distanced allows you to look at the data without the day-to-day noise of people trying to tell you what it means when (a) they often don't have a clue what they are talking about; and/or (b) they have started their "analysis" with the answer and now are just trying to persuade you to think like them.
