Yes, I thought the abbreviation was universally known. WC stands for water closet. In English parlance it's supposed to be a polite way of referring to the lavatory.

That's been around for many years and it's origin is Islamic. In fact, I first saw it in Malaysia about 10 years ago when I went there on vacation. The reason is that Muslims don't use paper and instead have some kind of snazzy technique with their left hand which they then have to wash. The spray in the toilet bowl allows them to keep their hand clean. In fact, it works well --- I've used it --- look Ma, no hands!

Interestingly enough, their religion forbids them to eat with their left hand and they are not allowed to "wipe" with their right hand. So, if their right hand is cut-off, according to Shariah law, because they were convicted of stealing, they may die of starvation because they are forbidden to eat with the left hand.
