Iraq is sitting on known oil reserves of a trillion dollars. It is costing us to billions just to keep the peace. So you want us to topple Saddam, keep the peace, and rebuild Iraq gratis?

I guess it wasn't about the oil then...

What about all the liberal idiots who were saying we were doing it "for the oil"? Do you not think it is important for them to be shown the idiots they are? The Hollywood crowd, the MoveOn.org crowd?

What happened to the new found freedom for the Iraqis the conservatives have been lauding? Isn't that worth the price of admission?

Without a rebuilding of Iraq they are unlikely to retain that freedom in the long run.

Iraq is sitting on known oil reserves of a trillion dollars.

Its not how big their reserves are. Its how much they can sell each year, how much profit is left after those sales and how much of that profit is left after making loan payments. Some of that money will go to rebuild Iraq but it won't be coming in at a fast enough rate.

Like I said.......conservatives are all so quick to slash and burn American social programs

No they are not. The programs never have been slashed and burned, and few conservatives ever even made an effort to slash and burn them.

but then want to spend billions on Iraqis. Something's up. What are conservatives getting out of it?

If we just walk out without suppressing the Baathist and rebuilding the country then it might be worse then if we had never invaded. I know you think that we shouldn't have, and while I don't totally agree with you I at least think your opinion there makes some sense, but thats not an option now, we did invade and we have to deal with the current situation, not with the situation as you would have wanted it to be. The bill that Bush submitted had about $20bil for rebuilding Iraq. That's something like 1/5th of 1% of our GDP and less then 1% of Federal spending. Its less then NASA's budget. Per American that's less then I spend on satellite TV each month. Not that I wouldn't like to be able to avoid spending that money, but it wouldn't be prudent and its hardly an unendurable burden.
