We know an awful lot. I can rely on maps to get to New York, I can rely on the physics of the internal combustion engine to get me there by car, I can rely on telecommunications technology to allow me to make various reservations ahead of time, I can rely on computer technology to follow through on these reservations. I put my life in the hands of the airlines periodically, and, by gum, aeronautical engineering works! When my wife and I are separated on business, we call on the phone, and are able to talk in real time. If we did not know a substantial amount, none of this would be possible. It relies on basic science, and it works. That it might be refined and/or added to is clear, but equally clear is that it has proven reliability.......
