That actually does work, though probably the ground temperature and the sheer volume of gas in the tank does not allow it to cool down that much. But if your are going on a long trip and top off your tank just before you leave on a morning when the temperature is below freezing, then drive several hundred miles in rising temperatures and stop to refill your tank, you will have the wonderful illusion that your car is getting 10% better gas mileage than you thought it could because the remaining gas will have expanded.

This is one of those lines of thought that is really not worth exploring. <G>
