"A staunch Roman Catholic, he affirmed his faith in the One God who created the universe."

He was a great author. I suspect that his mythical gullibility speaks to that talent. Imagination is a great gift if you wish to invent Middle Earth. I have read his books many times with great delight.

"I do not see how even in the Primary world any theologian or philosopher, unless very much better informed about the relation of spirit and body than I believe anyone to be, could deny the possibility of re-incarnation as a mode of existence, prescribed for certain kinds of rational incarnate creatures.""

How could anyone deny the possibility of owls turning into pumpkins which become people if the salmon screw at midnight? It is a hard thing to deny...exceedingly hard.
