The thing is put into the wrong light. He had admirers and detractors. His primary business was to make available translations and commentaries of Aristotle in Latin, which had not previously been known, but had come from the Byzantine Empire by way of the Arabs. Also, he was eager to help define the place of the new learning. That was his main task at that historical moment........
