"Or do we recognize that our society has limited resources and decide that those resources should not be used ... "

That is a utilitarian view. I am all for discussing the limitations of our society, as it is based on the limitations of our humanity; such as reconciling a heinous criminal with a status of equal membership. I question the notion of managing limited resources among the haves.

Once upon a time, a ship wrecked while out at sea. One of the 12 person life rafts was floating along with 12 people when it encountered a person begging for assistance. The spokesman leaned over the edge and sadly reported that the raft was at its capacity. The thirteenth man pleaded once again: Surely you can always make room for one more, throw out some supplies or extra cloths etc, you have responsibility for the life or death of a human soul... the 12 agreed and he slipped into the back of the raft with grand expressions of gratitude...pretty soon the raft came across another person pleading for her life... the thirteenth man leaned over the edge and stated ... You gotta be kidding, can't you see we're over loaded already.
