The original Zionists were secularists, and chose Palestine as their goal for its historical identity as a homeland, not primarily due to religion. The original objection to Jewish aspirations in Palestine was framed more in terms of pan- Arab aspirations than anything else, having been stirred by T.E. Lawrence as a reward for fighting the Turks. The British mandatory authority, which administered Palestine, had made incompatible promises to each party, and each relied upon them........
