"Anything that contradicts our interpretation of the "right doctrine of life" is treated with intense discordance, even violence." In a free society that is seldom the case except amongst fanatics. Most of us in mainstream society encounter weirdness everyday. It is no big deal. "If someone proposes an unpopular view they are likely to be met with hostility" Again...this is unlikely amongst rational people. It is more probable as a response from fanatics or lunatics. Rational people examine and assess proposals on their own merits.
