Hi John Cavanaugh; Re: "Both are equally valid and equally invalid."

(a) I don't think that the validity of the analogies can be put into such a simple form that one could measure them and test them for equality of validity.

(b) I believe that ALL of history should be looked at when examining the current situation, and that, therefore, both Vietnam AND WW2 are valid comparisons.

If we had killed (or eventually do kill) as many Arabs as we killed Germans, I believe that the survivors will surrender with a meekness approximating the German occupation. In that I agree that WW2 is a great analogy for the current situation. Similarly for Vietnam. If our forces try to win hearts and minds with guns (but not to the point of creating a slaughter of the magnitude of WW2), like they did in Vietnam, the inevitable result will be no pacification, and Vietnam is also a good analogy.

I don't think that it is politically possible for us to kill enough Arabs to pacify them. Nor do I believe that we can pacify just the country of Iraq while ignoring the rest of the Arab nations.

US-Viet Nam makes a far better analogy to US-Iraq than to the Allies-Axis struggle we call WWII ... sorry John, they're not equally valid at all, imho .... equally invalid, yes i'd agree in a sense, as they say 'history does not repeat' ... it does rhyme fair well though, seems the species needs to learn some lessons over and over

But i'm all for giving the world a break -g- ... which was my point to the Brumar poster, to just let's let up on this thing, no need to go into an extended and verbose snit because Carl exposed that Heck of a propaganda attempt by jessica'soilwell.com or whatever .... so i made a post on that, now you post to me, so i'm posting back ... oh lord woncha buy me a Nauseam Ends, my friends all got topics, i must move my lens ... y'all know what ah mean, huh

You follow Venezuela at all? ... how about this -

'Venezuela's Chavez Warns on Referendum
Sat Oct 18,10:59 PM ET

CARACAS, Venezuela - President Hugo Chavez issued a warning
Saturday to anyone planning to sign a referendum on his presidency,
saying their names would be registered and remembered "forever."

Venezuela's elections authority this week said the opposition could
gather signatures supporting a recall referendum from Nov. 28 to Dec. 1.
The constitution says a referendum request must be backed by
signatures from at least 20 percent of the electorate.

But Chavez warned: "Their names will be recorded forever."

"They should know that although they are not going to get (a
referendum), their names will be recorded. Unlike in a vote, which is
secret, they will sign. They will put their names and surnames, their
national ID number and their fingerprint," he said. '
