I am too close to shutting down the box to do justice to this, but I am not suggesting anything particularly mystical. "I think therefore I am": I am surer that I exist in some form, than that there is an external world.........

Rambi and I read Lying Awake- by Mark Salzman. It's an interesting view of dealing with the world, as "we" find it, from the point of view of a Carmelite nun, who finds she has epilepsy- which may threaten the whole nature of her understanding of her current relationship with God. The book states, although I have not independently checked this out, that nuns are asked if they suffer from epilepsy or mental illness, because the church is so wary of having physical ailments be at the root of "miraculous" visions.

Anyway, I really enjoyed the book, and it seems right on topic. You might enjoy it too. I think Rambi is enjoying it- but perhaps she will post and let you know.

I didn't see the point of disqualifying people with mental illness and epilepsy, myself- there's no reason their visions in their altered stated should be any better or worse than anyone else's- but the church doesn't agree with me.
