Yes, we did prove that socialism doesn't work in the long run. But some people still believe it would work if only we were all committed to it.

If we were different people than we are, maybe it might work. Or not. But we'll never know.

You're right, of course. If you don't believe that resources are limited, then there are no choices to make. If you believe that we can give heart transplants to everyone who needs one, then there's no issue. Except maybe for the people whose hearts get taken before they're quite ready to give them up because, of course, under a socialist system a young person otherwise healthy but with heart disease has more need for that heart than a 70 year old suffering from Alzheimer's who doesn't appreciate life.
