You want us to spend billions to prove a point?

Not to prove a point. To avoid the appearance of impropriety.

The billions being spent in Iraq are immaterial when compared with what it means to us to have a democracy in the center of the Middle East. The destruction that would be caused by us appearing to be in it for financial gain would be immeasurable. This way, the people in the Middle East, when it settles out, cannot accuse us of having any ulterior motive.

The bad blood between us and the Muslims did not start with the Iraqi war. There are decades of problems to overcome. The US can do everything perfect in Iraq and they still will find fault. I don't want to pay through the nose for them to criticize us.
