Sounds to me like the "powerful medications to make one last effort to reduce the inflammation in Dalton's lungs" was not a surfactant. ARDS might be helped by inhaling a particular surfactant but that doesn't mean its role is to fight inflammation. More likely, the drug mentioned was a steroid or other anti-inflammatory. I wouldn't assume that reference has anything to do with DSCO or Surfaxin.
