AQ may not have been formed until 1990, but OBL & Co. were actively recruiting Muslim radicals from all over the world to fight in Afghanistan years before that. AQ had its genesis in that effort, which had a lot more active American support than anyone is admitting these days.

The enemy of our enemy is not always out friend, something ideologues often fail to recognize.

Hindsight is 20/20, and neither Democrats nor Republicans wanted to hear anything about Osama or AQ in the '90s. They were all too busy trying to calculate their capital gains. Now they're all busy pointing fingers and trying to blame somebody else.

Hardly surprising.

Thanks. For this info. It reminds me about those who complain about how much the U.S. aided the Taliban when they were fighting the Soviets (not realizing that the Taliban were founded after the Soviets left Afghanistan).

p.s. I'd like to also mention the possible line between al Qaeda and John Doe #2, but you said "no conspiracy theories". :o)
