Return to the black was expected to be brief as the company continues to be dragged down by declining spending in the telecoms industry, a trend that few observers believe will change in the next year.

Frank D'Amelio, Lucent's chief financial officer, said margins were likely to slip to about 35 per cent during fiscal 2004.

Pat Russo, chairman and chief executive, said the company still faced "challenges". She also modified her comments last week when she refused to call a bottom to the declining telecoms equipment market.

The only thing that makes sense is to merge either with NT or ALA.
