Taiwan UMC To Be "Very Aggressive" Building Chip Plants
Thursday October 23, 8:46 am ET

TAIPEI -(Dow Jones)- The head of chip giant United Microelectronics Corp. (NYSE:UMC - News) said Tuesday his company plans to aggressively build new chip plants to meet anticipated demand.

" will be very aggressive in capacity expansion, especially in the 300 millimeter (chip plant) area," said Robert Tsao, chairman of UMC.

He was speaking at the opening of the Asia-Pacific office of the Fabless Semiconductor Association.

He didn't give a time frame. A new, state-of-the-art 300mm chip plant can cost up to US$3.6 billion.

"We currently have two (300mm) factories, one in Tainan (Taiwan) and the other in Singapore, and we are considering building more, faster, and in other countries," he said.

The head of the world's second largest chip foundry declined to elaborate, adding he would say more during UMC's third-quarter investors' conference, slated for Oct. 29.

Tsao made the statement in response to a comment by Xilinx Inc. (NasdaqNM:XLNX - News) Chief Executive Willem Roelandts, who said chip-design firms were concerned that there soon might not be enough production lines to fill all of their chip orders.

Chip foundries like UMC manufacture semiconductors developed by their customers. Xilinx is a major customer for UMC.
