That doesn't change the fact that the Americans, in the grip of the urge to use the mujahedin to give Ivan a good reaming, made significant contributions to the growth of Islamic radicalism. We certainly did. The most telling thing we did for it was helping them to beat Russia in Afghanistan. They then took the attitude that they had caused the fall of the Soviet Empire all by themselves and that we were cowards that would not fight. We had a lot of discussion at the time about helping the rebels for this very reason. All actions have consequences.
