Really, when push comes to shove, they aren't nearly as principled as they pretend to be. They don't want Uncle Sugar out of their lives, they just want him on their side.

It's not so bad not being principled. It's not unreasonable to choose a different metric. The bigger sin is the hypocrisy. They can go ahead and be self serving, but they should put that flag of principle away in the attic for such time as it might come back into vogue and quit waving it in our faces while they mock it with their actions.

I agree on PBA on Federalism grounds, disagree (tentatively) on the Defense of marriage act. The fact that folks married under the laws of one state must be recognized as married in other states makes that a Federal issue.

A considerable weakness in our Federalism comes from the fact that there seems to be nothing a state does that the Supreme court may not veto. Do you agree?

Federalism applies when they don't like the law, but they'll turn themselves into a pretzel to support the law when they like it.

Especially O'Conner! She will justify anything. People who are against abortion have a "Road to Damascus" experience when it is their wife or daughter in the situation.

For most people, it is a difficult and emotional decision.
