Hamas militant gets 16 life terms for role in Sbarro bombing

By Haaretz Service

A female Hamas activist was sentenced by a military
tribunal Thursday to 16 consecutive life terms for
assisting the terrorist who blew up the Sbarro
restaurant in Jerusalem two years ago, killing 15
people.

Hamas activist Ahlam Tamimi
drove the suicide bomber to
the site of the attack on
August 9, 2001. Fifteen
people were killed and more
than a hundred others were
wounded when the landmark
restaurant in the center of
Jerusalem was blown up.

Tamimi did not express regret for her actions.
She was sentenced at the Ofer military camp to
an additional 15 years on top of the 16 life
terms.

A month prior to the Sbarro attack, Tamim placed
an explosive device at a Jerusalem grocery
store. It detonated, but did not cause any
damage.

The Hamas suicide bomber who blew up Sbarro,
23-year-old Ahmed Al-Masari, carried an
explosive device hidden in a hand bag weighing
a few kilograms and littered with hundreds of
metal nuts and bolts.
