I make them do the work. It's simply that it is late. The problem is- when I accept late work it is 50% credit. All his work is late- so that's an f. But, if a student gets in everything, EVERYTHING, that is required by core standards (this means they've done all the workbook work in our Reader's Companion, they've done all the required essays, and they've done the Vocabulary work- as well as having good citizenship, or improved citizenship, and good attendance, I will give them a D or C- even though their point totals might be an f- I explain all this up front in my syllabus which I send home and have signed by the parents- so it's all up front and clearly explained). My classes tend to be bi-modal- I have the good students all up there at the A to A+ range, because they do all the extra credit, and then i have the slackers in the D-C- range that get in all their stuff in a desperate hail Mary pass at the end of the quarter. Sigh I have begun offering incentives for EARLY work, which was a suggestion of one of the slackers. Unfortunately only the A students are availing themselves of this option at the moment. :-(
