In fact, Soviets were trapped in Afghanistan by
the Carter-Brzezinski's scheme. Read Brzezinski's memoirs.
That was American dirtiest trick to stage a Soviet Vietnam
and bleed the Soviets in the most difficult environment.
Although it is presented here as a Soviet war, their military involvement there was indeed very limited, which is regarded now as a blunder. They could bomb a hell out of the American mercenaries too, but they did not. In last their years there, most fighting (like those near the Pakistan against, actually, Pakistan's army) was done by the Afghans themselves. Meanwhile America was stinking around the world its vilest disinformation about this.

"No. Soviet-American relations were in terrible shape in 1979 before Reagan took office."

>>> Of COURSE they were, that's exactly what I said!

>>> Why did the Soviet system crumble (aside from the inevitable economic failures of Communism):

>>> The Pressure of a decades long Cold War (economic pressure + military pressure)

>>> The relative economic out-performance of the Western free market systems (the highly visible economic performance in the West... leading to desires by the general Soviet citizenry to improve their lives as well).

>>> Fascile attempts to 'assign all the credit' for the failure of the Communist system to Reagan... is like giving all the credit for the win to a pitcher who comes in during the last inning. It ignores all the important work that preceded.

>>> The Soviet economy had shrunk to a tiny fraction the size of ours by the 'eighties.
