Hiring at Winnebago, United Parcel Hints at Sustained U.S. Economic Growth

We're hiring people right now,'' Bruce Hertzke, chief executive of Winnebago, the world's biggest maker of motor homes, said in an interview Tuesday. United Parcel, the largest package- delivery company, plans to add workers following its first increase in manufacturers' shipments in three years last quarter, Chief Financial Officer Scott Davis said Tuesday.

Aggressive' Hiring
Forest City, Iowa-based Winnebago has added 40 peopl and may need as many as 100 more by yearend, Chief Executive Hertzke said. ``We're hiring them every week,'' he said. The company had 3,685 employees as of September 2002.
United Parcel in the last two months has seen ``strengthening across all our customer base,'' Davis, chief financial officer of the Atlanta-based company, said in an interview. ``We will be hiring workers as the volume increases,'' and ``I would anticipate more in later November into the holiday season,'' he said.
CACI International Inc., which manages computer networks for the U.S. military, hired 350 people in the quarter ended Sept. 30 and wants to hire 400 more, Chief Executive Jack London said in an interview yesterday. ``We're very aggressive,'' London said.
Arlington, Virginia-based CACI on Wednesday reported a 38 percent increase in earnings for the quarter, helped by higher Pentagon and other federal spending.

Monaco Coach Corp., the third-largest maker of motor homes, also is hiring because of rising demand. The Coburg, Oregon, company added 120 workers in Indiana and Oregon as it increased production amid improved sales following the Iraq war, Chief Executive Kay Toolson said in a telephone interview. Monaco had cut production 20 percent in March as sales slowed.
CDW Corp., which sells computers and software to businesses and governments, has ``added several hundred account managers to help generate more revenue at the company,'' John Edwardson, chief executive of the Mt. Vernon, Illinois, company said in a radio interview with Bloomberg News.
Winnebago, United Parcel and the other companies expanding payrolls remain in the minority. While the Labor Department said an index measuring employment among companies in 278 industries rose to 47.1 last month, the highest since March 2001, the figure remains below the 50 that indicates more companies are adding rather than reducing jobs.

Section 179 Deduction - helps in Motor Homes. What is amazing to me is that it is an increase in the most popular business in America that is housing I guess military spending is popular too.
