curious as to how you know they carry 2.5M titles

Actually my 2.5 million figure is conservative. I was relying on a 1997 press release. docs.yahoo.com

According to addall.com Amazon now carries 3 million titles. I do not think that includes the affiliated book sellers in their z shops who sell mainly used books through the Amazon site. If that were included, I am sure the total would be over 10 million, if you consider that Barnes & Noble is listed at "over 8 million titles".

If you include the z shops and Amazon's foreign sites, I believe the total may be closer to 20 million titles.

ABE clearinghouse alone had 12 million titles in 1999.
