JF, in my opinion, we hardly get any acts of terrorism on our soil because of the threat of swift and terrible retribution. America has a long history of isolationism, and IMO, most of America's enemies would rather force America back to isolationism than confront her directly. It's different in Europe, and I think one reason why there isn't much terrorism in Europe anymore is both the changing demographics and the political leanings, for better or for worse.

Maybe it's that our freedom and self-determination is so seductive to folks that immigrate, that they lose their hatred (???). That's got to be a pollyannish sentiment.

Columbine, The Unabomber, Timothy McVeigh, the anthrax scare, D.C. snipers, etc. We have plenty of homegrown terrorists to worry about. Any Pollyanna can easily be reminded of the evils that come straight from the homeland.

I don't know why terrorism, if you look at history, or the present for that matter, is so rare in this country. Maybe it's that our freedom and self-determination is so seductive to folks that immigrate, that they lose their hatred (???). That's got to be a pollyannish sentiment.

John, I think it has more to do with logistics, past history and geography.

First, the European nations have many more Muslims living within their borders. Its easier for Muslims to undertake clandestine activities without being noticed.

Secondly, many of the current Muslim nations were colonies of the European nations in which a great deal of resentment built up over the years. For many, gaining independence from the European colonizers took many bloody years and was only three or four decades ago. Memories are long. Plus it was the European Crusaders who helped bring down the Islamic Empire in 1099. Things have never been right since then.

Thirdly, the Middle East is right next to Europe........much more accessible than the US. I think it took nearly ten years to raise the money and put the logistics in place to do WTC. I think the next one will be a suicide bomber with a dirty bomb. I think its just a matter of time when it will happen.
