Marginally meaningfull- If the US cut imports to where 95-99% of our needs can be met by imports from the Western Hemisphere - Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, Ecuador, Columbia, etc. that would be useful on the margin.

That can leave Europe dependent on the Middle East, but not the US. Gives the US a little more leverage.

If there is also more oil development in Russia, East Africa and other places so that the world economy would take less of a hit if the Straights of Hormuz were closed, that would also help.

I will agree that the rest of the statements is political hot air or the worst kind. It's even worse if the presidential candidates believe it...

It is a fair statistic but doesn't take into account any changes in our consumption of oil in the next twenty, thirty years as a result or improved mileage, alternate sources of energy etc. We made dramactic change in consumption since first major shortage in seventies... This business is crazy.. and trying to forecast where we will be in the next thirty years doesn't have a great track record..

Any oil we can bring on from supplies in United States will help leverage our country against the opec folks ..The last time we got serious about cutting back it almost dried up money in Saudi for all the programs they had going on.. I believe Saudi still remembers it is a balancing act. If they step too far they may lose big time...
