Conor, way out the money puts are no solution un the case of a market crash with the blessings of the exchanges.
These could decide to freeze options trading "in order to prevent an unjustified panic" until the market recovers, or force exercize at any level they chose.

The inverse funds you mention: there are some @ RYDEX

and there also is a thread here on SI where the guys just switch from the bullish to the bearish ones.
Same problem: if the exchages are frozen, no way to trade, worse, no way to exit. Remember 911.
