The Kremlin-generated theory, that the Democrats have adopted, that the threat to peace and civilization springs from American power, requires ignoring the universal concept that people desire freedom and are often held captive to tyrants or their own mass ignorance. A Saddam Hussein prison state can thus be looked on by Democrats as an "Iraqi choice", and the liberation of such by America as some sort of crime.

The Soviet regime was looked at by liberals in America as a "Russian choice".

We don't need hair-splitting lawyers to define treason, any more today than ever...

I'm sure that the general was influenced to democracy by his associates. Democracy has a long tradition in Europe and America by then. Nothing wrong with letting democracy bloom by example. I'm sure there were incentives to the general by the west as well.

A democracy is a better trading partner, and a better risk for loaning money. Saddam took 200 billion of the world's money in loans, and those loans are now worthless.

The tradition in many Muslim countries is dictatorship. Follows right along with the religious leadership and heirarchy. One man at the top with little or no checks and balances. I'm not sure that democracy can be installed under these conditions, especially as a result of a war. The middle east history is long with conquest being overtaken by conquest. Warlords rule the day.

I think that the carrot, is a better way to sway a country to democracy than the stick. We'll see.
