It should be noted that the president is presenting a textbook lesson in leadership, taking the initiative, creating a new set of facts, and forcing people to respond to them. After years of Clinton, people were beginning to forget what it looked like to offer decisive leadership, rather than try to tease out a governing consensus through endless polling and adaptation. This is one of the things throwing off the pundits, as well as Democratic politicians. They do not understand what it is to dominate a situation rather than position yourself, and therefore it merely looks like Bush has opened up vulnerabilities.
