Yes, there are alternatives. Part of my thought here is this: one can condemn the Holocaust on the basis that human society cannot subsist when men are capable of such barbarity on so thin a pretext,and therefore deplore it. But one cannot say that it is a cosmic evil, unless one thinks that morality is part of the cosmic order in a deep sense. There is something deeply unsatisfying about saying that such a thing is merely imprudent, as it were, rather than that it is inherently an offense.
