The Skokie incident is worth remembering, if only because it marked a major turning point for the ACLU. Before that, they didn't let donors control their decisions, but forged ahead on the basis of core principles. Since then, IMO, since they lost enormous amounts of financial donations over the case they have become much more concened about satisfying a donor base, which is, IMO, inimicible to a principled stand on civil liberties. They still do take on a few mildly unpopular causes, but they are a shadow of their former selves, and at times seem totally controlled by whether a position will play with their donors.
