Howard Dean is NOT ahead nationally, take a look:

FOX News/Opinion Dynamics Poll. Oct. 14-15, 2003. N=345 registered Democrats nationwide.

"I'm going to read you a list of names of some possible candidates for the Democratic nomination for president in the next election. If a 2004 Democratic primary for president were held today, which ONE of the following candidates would you most likely vote for?" If "Not sure," ask: "Well, to whom do you lean at this time?" Names rotated

10/14-15
% % %
Wesley Clark 13
Howard Dean 12
Joe Lieberman 11
John Kerry 10
Dick Gephardt 9

* Within the margin of error that's a five-way tie. The big winner is still undecided. Some 35%. New Hampshire aside, Dean has not convinced Democrats outside his home base and a few liberal strongholds. I don't think Lieberman can win, but the other four are all possible winners. A lot will depend on who endorses who and upcoming debates. Also, Bush is finally bringing international help to Iraq so the war issue (which is Dean's primarily) will wane a bit. Most Americans still want a leader who's tough on terrorism and has experience at it.

Don't think Hillary would make any difference. She has too high of a negative rating. It is something very difficult for her to overcome. Maybe time will do it. I'm not sure. She is just not good enough to beat DEAN.
