<How long was Saddam "in favor" with the US? Maybe 1-2 years (in the early 1980s)?>

Starting in 1959, when the CIA first helped Saddam in an unsuccessful assassination attempt against the pre-Baathist dictator who helped found OPEC.

Continuing through the 1960s, when the CIA provided the Baathists with lists of Communists and Nasserite PanArabists to Disappear.

Continuing all the way through the Iran-Iraq war. Saddam got hi-level visits from Reagan Administration officials in the 1980s, loans and weapons from America's allies in the region (Kuwait and Saudi Arabia).

30 years.

This is another example, where today's Party Line must be legitimized, by pretending it has always been the Party Line. We are against Saddam now, so the Faithful must pretend we have always been against Saddam. This merely requires a willingness to rewrite history, or at least do some heavy editing.
