Yes, it looks like they've tapped into what I discovered while visiting my Democrat in Laws in Boston, who cancelled their subscription to the Boston Globe when they started printing gay unions side by side with marriages in the paper.

Not only could Republicans energize the vote from conservative in the south on this issue, but they could divide the Democrat Catholics as well.

The simple fact is a majority of Americans do not favor gay marriage. Most people will say "why can't they get a contract of unity or some other nice sounding phrase which accomplishes virtually the same thing."

We've already seen the reluctance of leading Democrats to take on this issue already. Roughly the same thing happened in regard to the Boy Scouts and pledge of allegiance. They're cultural issues which a majority of Americans agree with conservatives on.
