Why should that be any surprise? While Dean is a perfect candidate in New Hampshire (might as well be from there) he is not a strong candidate anywhere else outside where Nader did well. Those places like Washington state and Minnesota with strong traditional liberal activist crowds. Even the Iowa caucuses are dominated by anti-war liberals, which is why Lieberman and Clark aren't competing there. Dean will be a strong contender for the Dem nomination and may even be the frontrunner (we'll see) but I know the GOP is licking its chops to get their hands on Dean. If they can make Max Cleland looks like a traitor despite his heroism and sacrifice in Vietnam, they won't have much trouble with Dean. Dukakis or Mondale II. The GOP made the same mistake running Bob Dole. They pleased their faithful base but displeased the nation, and the rnning mate won't help much. Kemp, Bentsen, Ferraro made no difference. The only way to beat Bush is to take away his military issues, and that cannot be done with an anti-war message. Finally, Dean's big lead in NH (assuming one poll is right and not the other) may hold hold. Jeanne Shaheen is Kerry's co-chairman and she has never lost a NH primary for the candidates she's worked for. Notice Clinton and the DNC gave her a big dinner party this week, signalling their marshalling of forces to neutralize the Dean movement in NH. 30% in NH are still undecided and Kerry's approvals are identially high to Dean's there. Half the voters could go either way, it seems, sitting on fences.
