this slides dangerously close to the prevalent idea that anything bad must be America's fault, somehow or other

Yes I have heard that theory and it sucks. It sucks just as much as the theory that we are here to do only good and any bad that comes from us is due to unforeseen consequences of the evil in other people's hearts.

The fact of the matter is that without the crooks and hot heads in those countries and without their internal supporters, most of the bad things that happens to them would not have happened. But that does not mean we do not take advantage of shady opportunities or even do not create them for our own benefit. The problem is not unlike the drug issue: Who is at fault? The drug dealer who is pushing his stuff on the street? Or the junkies who demand he brings them the crack and are willing to do anything for it? I'd say a bit of both and then some of other things like poor government policies.

We just overthrew the worst of the dictators with the stated objective of founding a democracy; why doesn't that make you happy

Because I am not in favor of playing god and I do believe the best path for all concerned parties, including us, is one of least involvement.
