Mahathir denies Bush rebuke

KUALA LUMPUR: Dr Mahathir Mohamad has accused US President George W Bush of lying when he told reporters that he had rebuked the Malaysian leader for his 'Jews rule the world' remarks.

With just six days until he retires, the prime minister is speaking without any apparent regard for the consequences. It was the biggest lie. If he'd rebuked me I'm quite sure I would have rebuked him also, Dr Mahathir said.

If you can tell a lie about the existence of weapons of mass destruction and go to war because of it I'm not surprised if he is prepared to lie about what he said to me.

Rather, the Malaysian leader insists, the president had apologised for speaking out against him, after which they were walking practically hand in hand, Dr Mahathir said.

Meanwhile, the veteran prime minister has called on Malaysians to stand up against what he termed blackmail by those Jewish groups who have called for a boycott of foreign investment in the country.

I don't think we should allow ourselves to be blackmailed by them...The press belongs to the Jews and their power is so great that people are afraid to criticize them, he was quoted as saying.

On the other hand, you can accuse Muslims of being terrorists ... and Europe does not protest, he added.

Hi IQBAL LATIF; Re: "Such a temporary technological or artistic chain reaction can take place even during a period when the general intelligence level of a society is declining due to population shifts, such as the influx of large numbers of less intelligent persons, or due to the percentage increase of a less intelligent sector of a society due to the disproportional replication of members of such groups."

My observation of the human species is that intelligence is fairly equally distributed among the various corners of the globe. Human intelligence steadily increases over the decades without any change to the genome. And for that matter, when large numbers of Jews immigrated to the US about 100 years ago, there was substantial complaint that the new immigrants were hopelessly stupid. The same was said of pretty much every ethnic group.

One of the characteristics of lasting empires, like the British and Roman, is that they tend to accept foreigners and convert them to their own way of life. The US has been spectacularly successful at that. One of our secrets has been to reject notions of intellectual differences depending on genetics. Even if it were scientifically proved, we would reject it because it is inconvenient to our way of life. And I believe that any such scientific proof will also come with an admittance that the differences between the averages will be far less than the individual variance.
