Conversely, you may have been premature. The early stuff appeared to me to be politics as usual, not hatred.

I have to disagree based on my personal experiences. My father a Navy WWII vet, devout catholic father of nine, retired defense radar systems engineer had an almost instinctual reaction bordering on hatred for Clinton beginning in the primaries. In his eyes Clinton represented an attach on his entire value system. My dad's not a political person but he refused to fly the flag on holidays while Clinton was president. I was shocked at the depth of his reaction to Clinton, it was so unlike him.
