You already sanction it. You just don't realize it.

I sanction it too- just by living here, and taking some of the benefits I take- but at least I realize I sanction it. And I have some idea of what I am sanctioning.

Over time, people of color will have more of the benefits of money and beauty and nepotism and the rest, too. If we pull the rug out from under the ideal of meritocracy before they get a chance, it doesn't do them or the rest of us any good.

The problem, of course, is that in the last century we converted from a society which expected to work to get ahead to a society which expects instant success without effort. The Puritans and others who landed on this continent didn't have it easy. They struggled, and many died prematurely. But they persevered, and eventually their offspring had success in the "New World."

So with successive waves of immigrants. Each group struggled, to the point that today we don't denigrate the Germans, the Dutch, the Irish, the Chinese, etc.

But today, groups are less willing to "pay their dues." They want it all, now, and they want the government to give it to them and guarantee it to them, unearned.

A very good friend found out last week that four hundred years ago an Indian climbed into his family tree. Because of this wondrous event he is now officially sanctioned as "Metis". This means he can catch as many fish as he wants, shoot moose out of season, be entirely reimbursed for his college education and have all his student loans forgiven. Do you find merit in this?
