NEWS: US support for Bush drops: poll

Sun, 26 Oct 2003 19:15 AEST

A Newsweek poll carried out this week shows support in the United States for President George W Bush is waning.

The weekly magazine reports that 58 per cent of Americans think the United States is spending too much on the reconstruction of Iraq.

The poll also shows that voters were almost equally divided over Mr Bush personally, with 46 per cent in favour of his re-election and 47 against.

The poll's editor, Kel Dougherty, says the number of Americans wanting the troops home is steadily climbing.

"It's up 7 per cent in the last month, up from 32 per cent to 39 per cent and we see sharp increases among Democrats, women, young people."

"All are becoming increasingly supportive of pulling the troops out as soon as possible.

"There's still a majority that says they want to wait until a stable government is formed, but there's momentum on the other side."
